How to clean plantation shutters

One of the main benefits of plantation shutters is their easy maintenance and cleaning. Depending on the material, mostly the slats and frames just need a wipe down with a damp cloth and a regular dusting.

Discover our expert tips on regular cleaning and maintenance, why to be gentle when handling and different tips for different shutter materials.

Regular cleaning

Your shutters should be included in your regular house cleaning to keep them looking fresh and bright. One of the best things about our plantation shutters is that cleaning only requires a damp cloth and warm water with a small amount of cleaning liquid.

Use a soft dust brush, vacuum with a brush attachment, or a microfibre cloth to regularly dust the slats and frame and avoid dust build up over time.

Dampen the cloth and gently wipe down the slats. If necessary, follow with a towel to dry, otherwise, leave the slats open to dry.

Be gentle when handling

Though shutters are resilient, rough handling can still lead to a shorter lifespan and the potential need for replacements. Always open and close your shutters and slats gently, and grease any mechanisms yearly to prevent rust or stiffness. When cleaning, the best option is warm water mixed with a mild detergent. Use a microfibre cloth for surfaces, a soft brush for textured areas, and cotton swabs for corners and hinges.

Avoid using harsh chemicals like bleach or strong vinegar mixtures, as these can cause damage. If you're dealing with stubborn stains, skip the strong chemicals and consider safer alternatives, like painting over the area.

Tips for each material

Different shutter materials require slightly different care to keep them looking their best:

  • Timber Shutters: After wiping, always dry thoroughly to prevent water damage or warping. Timber is more sensitive to moisture, so avoid leaving any dampness behind.
  • PVC Shutters: Although they are more moisture-resistant than timber, PVC shutters will benefit from regular drying to maintain their finish.

  • Aluminium Shutters: These are durable and low-maintenance, but to avoid surface scratches, always use a soft, non-abrasive cloth when cleaning.

Tailoring your cleaning approach to suit the material will help extend the life and appearance of your shutters.

Removing mould from shutters

Mould can build up in humid or poorly ventilated areas. To safely remove mould from shutters, start by mixing warm water with a mild detergent. Using a soft cloth or sponge, gently wipe the affected areas. Be careful not to oversaturate timber shutters, as excess moisture can cause damage. For stubborn spots or tight corners, a soft brush or cotton swab can help lift mould without harming the surface.

Always dry the shutters thoroughly after cleaning, especially timber, to prevent further mould growth. Regular ventilation and light exposure can also help keep mould from returning.
